Reston, VA September 14, 2005 —
Bob Dole, author of "One Soldier's Story" who has been called "a towering figure" and "the most enduring Republican leader of the twentieth century" has added his name to the Honorary Board for Kids Serve Too, a non profit program of Salute Our Services, Inc., to honor and support children of deployed military. Senator Dole has a distinguished record of public service that has made a tremendous positive impact on America including his record setting 12 years as the leader of his party in the Senate which made him the longest serving Senate leader of the Republican Party since the party's founding in 1854.
A decorated veteran of World War II who was wounded in action, Dole knows firsthand the sacrifices made by our nation's military. "It was an honor to meet him," says Kat Lanigan, Co-Chair of the Kids Advisory committee for Kids Serve Too. "He genuinely understands what we go through," says the 14 year old whose father, Maj. Kevin Lanigan, is currently serving in Iraq with the US Army Reserves.
Kids Serve Too recognizes the sacrifices children make when a parent is deployed by holding events around the country for the children, working with public schools to make them aware of the issues facing these children, and by easing financial pressure for military families by providing grants for children to maintain their extracurricular activities during deployments.
6 year-old Teddy Reddington, also a military child, shared Kat Lanigan's enthusiasm on meeting Dole. "He was really cool," says Reddington who shared a soda with the Senator.
Salute Our Services, Inc. is a national non profit 501 (C) (3) founded in 2001by military families, for military families to support Soldiers and their families during deployments. The Kids Serve Too program relies on support from the community.
